The RJ45 computer connector looks similar to the RJ11 telephone equivalent. But the main difference between the devices is the number of pins. The telephone models have 4 pins, while the data models have 8 pins. For this reason, while the RJ45 computer socket can be used as a telephone socket, it is not possible to connect computer equipment to the RJ11 connector.

Categories of data outlets

The category to which the computer socket belongs determines the distance over which the signal will be transmitted with minimum distortion and the data transmission rate itself.

In equipping office and residential networks, the following types of outlets are more commonly used:

  • RJ-45 Cat.5 - designed for 100BASE-TX networks with 125 MHz bandwidth and data transfer rate within 100 Mbit/s.
  • RJ-45 Cat.5e - a more \"advanced\" version allowing to transmit data for two pairs within 100 Mbit/s, for four pairs - 1000 Mbit/s.
  • RJ-45 Cat.6 - designed for networks \"Gigabit Ethernet\" and \"Fast Ethernet\". The bandwidth of the device is up to 1000Mbit/sec.

There are several basic parameters by which computer outlets are divided. One of them is the mounting method.

External and internal connection points

Depending on the mounting method, devices are divided into two types:

  • External - used when the device must be placed on the wall surface. On the back of the outdoor unit there is a connector equipped with knife contacts. If the wire is pressed into them, the insulation breaks through the cores, making installation much easier.

The main criterion to follow when choosing a device is the availability of additional ports. For example, if you need to serve several pieces of equipment, double RJ-45 outlets are the right choice. In a dual-module model, one RJ-45 port can be connected to a computer and the second RJ-11 port to a telephone.

There are also models in which both modules are designed to connect computer equipment. But the ports differ in category and type of shielding. The use of such devices allows you to save an item of expenditure by combining modules according to your needs and equipment category.

TIA/EIA-568-A standard is used for connecting 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T networks. There is no need to worry that you might accidentally mix things up when connecting twisted-pair cabling. Modern router models are designed for both. Therefore, they are able to automatically switch the signal.

There is nothing complicated about connecting the computer outlets with your own hands. You just have to follow a given sequence of steps.

Selecting the right tools

You should prepare:

  • Hearth hammer with a hammer drill of corresponding diameter;
  • A stripping blade;
  • A set of screwdrivers;
  • Tester.

In addition to the basic tool kit, you should take care in advance to purchase crimping pliers. This tool costs about $10. Therefore it makes sense to rent it for a single job.

Cable entry and socket mounting

First thing to do is to bring the cable to the mounting point. It may be installed in an open or closed way. The first method consists of routing the cable in plastic boxes with removable covers or placing them behind baseboard walls.

Each pair is carefully brushed smoothly. It is not necessary to strip them as the platform device itself provides a secure contact. The front panel is removed from the socket body by unscrewing the bolt that fixes it.

Ideal, if the connector housing \"fits\" properly in the socket, no efforts are needed. If the cable has to be rewired, just cut the end again and do the same, but with a different \"jack\".
